Position Summary
The Golf Club at The Highlands, a privately owned 18-hole championship golf course, is seeking a hands-on Golf Course Superintendent (or an experienced Assistant Superintendent ready to advance) to lead turfgrass operations and maintain championship-quality playing conditions.
The course features Zorro Zoysia fairways and MiniVerde Bermuda greens, making it one of the northernmost Bermuda greens facilities in Virginia. This position is ideal for an individual with a strong agronomic background and experience managing warm-season grasses in a transitional climate.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and bunkers to championship standards
- Develop and execute the golf course turfgrass management program
- Prepare and manage annual maintenance budgets
- Supervise and train maintenance staff
- Oversee cultural practices, irrigation, fertility, and pest management programs
- Manage chemical and fertilizer applications while maintaining compliance records
- Coordinate equipment maintenance and vendor purchasing
- Promote a safe, productive work environment and ensure safety compliance
Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Turfgrass Management, or a related field preferred
- Minimum of three years of relevant golf course maintenance experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Proven experience managing turf, particularly through winter preparation and spring transition
- Experience with turf renovation projects, sod installation, and grow-in operations
- Strong knowledge of irrigation, fertility programs, cultural practices, turf recovery, and disease management for warm-season grasses in northern climates
- Valid driver's license required
- Pesticide Applicator License required or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills preferred
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally

- Staff leadership and development
- Budget planning and vendor relations
