About Us:

Nestled between the bustling city life of Charlotte and the serene mountains of Asheville lies one of the area’s most historic Country Clubs. For almost 100 years, Cleveland Country Club, the only private Club in Cleveland County, has taken great pride in its family-friendly membership lifestyle, golf, tennis, dining, and special events. The Club has a Member Dining Room & Bar, three Banquet Rooms, six Tennis Courts, an 18 Hole Golf Course, and two practice putting/chipping areas. Offering the ultimate golf experience in the area, Cleveland Country Club’s course provides a unique challenge to both the accomplished and novice golfer. The challenging Par 72, 18 Hole course, with newly renovated bunkers, was designed by John LaFoy, in 1927. The course measures 6,443 yards from the blue tees, has a slope of 136, and a 71.8 USGA course rating. The greens are Mini Verde Bermuda and the fairways and roughs are 419 Bermuda.


Job Summary:

Manages and maintains Golf Course properties including Golf Course, Clubhouse Grounds and Landscaping, open spaces and the equipment used to maintain these areas. The Golf Course Superintendent leads and manages their department to ensure superb golf conditions throughout the year in a financially conservative and responsible manner.

 

Job Description:

  • Maintains all grounds and course maintenance equipment according to the Club’s turf management program.
  • Schedules, trains, supervises and evaluates all personnel assigned to department.
  • Supervises all planting, fertilizing, care and removal of turf, plants, shrubs, trees and other facilities on the Golf Course.
  • Supervises operation of the equipment repair shop.
  • Records all maintenance on course.
  • Prepares annual budget for department; takes corrective action as necessary to help assure that budget goals are met.
  • Selects and prepares proper fertilizers and nutrients for all flora and fauna.
  • Develops and maintains drainage, irrigation and watering systems.
  • Maintains course in proper playing condition.
  • Implements and enforces comprehensive safety program for employees, members and guests on course in compliance with local, state and federal laws; implements and manages the Club’s Safety Data Sheets (SDS) hazard communication (HAZCOM) program.
  • Maintains accurate work records for all personnel in the department.
  • Communicates as necessary with golf professional to discuss conditions of facilities, maintenance plans and scheduled events.
  • Communicates as necessary with the Golf Committee.
  • Ensures that chemicals, petroleum and other controlled products are used, stored and disposed of in accordance with local, state and federal regulations; maintains required records and strives to minimize the use of chemicals and petroleum products.
  • Attends staff and management meetings.
  • Attends turf conferences, equipment shows, workshops and other educational programs to maintain a current knowledge of technical and turf innovations and changes that could affect the department’s operations.
  • Prepares and revises grounds manual.
  • Establishes short- and long-range plans for the Golf Course.
  • Oversees all course construction and maintenance.
  • Keeps General Manager informed about current and future maintenance activities.
  • Conducts daily facility security checks ensuring accurate inventory of equipment and keys.
  • Plans professional development and training activities for staff including safety training for equipment use and proper handling of fertilizers, herbicides and all other chemicals used on course.
  • Makes recommendations for capital improvement and purchases.
  • Supervises cart path maintenance on the Golf Course.
  • Ensures proper landscaping for property outside of Golf Course including the Clubhouse and surrounding areas.
  • Coordinates applicable work with outside contractors.
  • Inspects course regularly to evaluate and recommend improvements.
  • Determines if and when course should be closed due to weather conditions that may damage the course if play continues.
  • Interacts with the Golf Professional to maximize the number of rounds played.
  • Conducts other appropriate tasks assigned by the General Manager.

 

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Have worked for a minimum of five years at a Golf Course known for providing exceptional golf course conditioning.
  • Proven experience managing Mini Verde and 419 Bermuda.
  • Have a natural style of “sincere engagement” with the Staff and Membership with a love for the game of golf and a passion for surpassing customer course conditioning expectations.
  • Ability to work in conjunction with all Management Team Members.
