The City of Thomasville is seeking a Golf Course Assistant Superintendent to support the planning, scheduling, and daily operations of golf course maintenance within the Parks and Recreation Department. This position assists in maintaining high-quality turf conditions across greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, and landscaped areas. Key responsibilities include monitoring turf health, identifying and addressing disease, pests, and environmental stress, and participating in cultural practices such as mowing, aeration, topdressing, and overseeding. The role also supports pesticide and fertilizer applications, including proper calibration and safe handling of materials, as well as routine irrigation system maintenance and adjustments based on course conditions.
The Assistant Superintendent operates and trains staff on specialized turf equipment, including mowers, sprayers, and aerators, while promoting safe work practices and proper use of personal protective equipment. This position assists in supervising maintenance staff, assigning daily tasks, and ensuring work is completed efficiently and to quality standards. Additional responsibilities include assisting with bunker maintenance, drainage, tree care, debris removal, and storm recovery.
The Assistant Superintendent exercises independent judgment in decisions related to course setup, including pin placement, tee positioning, and temporary closures to protect turf and ensure player safety. This position requires strong knowledge of turfgrass management practices, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, outdoor environment with varying weather conditions. The role also involves interaction with golfers and the public to support a positive course experience.
