Job Summary
Manage and maintain golf course properties in accordance with adopted standards, including golf course, practice facilities, clubhouse grounds and landscaping, open spaces, and the equipment used to maintain these areas.
Position Summary
The Country Club of Charleston (est. 1900) is seeking a visionary and accomplished Director of Agronomy to lead all aspects of golf course and grounds operations at one of the South’s most historic and respected clubs. Home to a Seth Raynor masterpiece and host of the 2013 US Women’s Amateur Championship, 2019 U.S. Women’s Open, and future host site of the 2028 USGA Men’s Mid-Am Championship, the Club proudly honors its championship pedigree and unwavering dedication to the game of golf.
The Club is embarking on an exciting new chapter with a comprehensive golf course restoration, scheduled completion by September 2026, and the construction of a state-of-the-art golf maintenance facility, to be completed by May 2026. The Director of Agronomy will play a key leadership role in these transformational projects—collaborating closely with architects, engineers, and the Club’s leadership team to ensure that all work reflects the Club’s commitment to authenticity, tradition, and world-class conditioning.
This individual will be responsible for developing and executing agronomic programs that preserve the course's design integrity, elevate playing conditions to championship standards, and position the Country Club of Charleston for long-term success and sustainability.
Job Tasks/Duties
- Oversee all aspects of golf course maintenance, including turf health, irrigation, pest control, and landscape management.
- Ensure golf course is always maintained to tournament-quality standard.
- Development and implementation of agronomic programs that optimize playability,
- aesthetics, and sustainability.
- Ensure proper landscaping for property outside of the golf course, including the practice
- facilities, clubhouse, and surrounding areas.
- Recruit, train, and lead a motivated agronomy team with a focus on professional
- development and accountability.
- Foster a culture of safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
- Provide clear and direct communication.
- Develop and manage the department’s operating and capital budgets.
- Collaborate with the General Manager, Director of Golf, and Green Committee on longterm course planning and projects.
- Manage vendor relationships and oversee procurement of materials, equipment, and
- supplies.
- Coordinate and manage outside staffing agency vendor relationships as needed.
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
- Implement sustainable practices in water management, chemical usage, and habitat
- preservation.
- Serve as a champion for environmentally responsible turfgrass management.
- Communicate proactively with General Manager, Golf Professionals, Green Committee,
- and membership regarding course conditions, maintenance schedules, and projects.
- Maintains accurate work records for all personnel in the department.
- Attend staff and management meetings.
- Supervises road and roadside maintenance within the club’s grounds.
- Conducts other appropriate tasks assigned by the General Manager.
Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, or Turfgrass Science.
- Minimum 8-10 years of progressively responsible experience in golf course management.
- Previous work as an assistant to an experienced Golf Course Superintendent.
- Previous supervisory experience in a club or golf course setting.
- Proven expertise in managing warm-season turfgrasses in the Southeastern US preferred.
Availability
- Regular workdays may include early morning, evening, weekends, and holidays as required
- to meet the needs of the golf course and member events.
- Must be available for urgent issues, including weather events, equipment failures, or
- tournament preparations.
Licenses and Special Requirements
- Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS).
- Pesticide Application certification.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Irrigation or Water Management Certification.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Ability to walk, stand, and move over uneven terrain for extended periods.
- Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Work is performed in both office and outdoor environments with exposure to Lowcountry
- weather conditions.
- Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping, and pulling.
- Moderate to high noise from equipment
