Position Summary
River Oaks Golf Club is seeking a highly motivated, career-driven individual to fill the position of Assistant in Training (AIT). This is a developmental role designed for individuals pursuing a long-term career in golf course management and advancement to Assistant Superintendent.
The AIT will work directly alongside the Golf Course Superintendent and management team in all aspects of daily maintenance operations featuring:
- 3 acres Mach 1 Ultradwarf Bermudagrass greens
- 419 Bermudagrass tees, fairways, and rough
- Fescue native areas
This position offers hands-on leadership experience, agronomic planning exposure, and real-world decision-making opportunities within an improvement-focused golf facility.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The Assistant in Training will actively participate in and learn the following:
- Assist with daily staff training, task delegation, and performance evaluation
- Lead small crews during morning assignments and special projects
- Operate and maintain all turf equipment safely and efficiently
- Assist in irrigation scheduling, troubleshooting, and repair
- Participate in pesticide and fertilizer applications (including calibration and record keeping)
- Monitor turf conditions and communicate observations to management
- Support bunker maintenance, greens management, drainage work, and course improvement projects
- Assist with inventory control, regulatory compliance, and safety documentation
- Promote a culture of professionalism, accountability, and equipment care
- Participate in winter projects, capital improvements, and course renovation initiatives
- This position is structured to progressively build responsibility toward Assistant Superintendent-level duties.
Qualifications
- Enrolled in or planning to enroll in a Turfgrass Management or related program (certificate, 2-year, or 4-year)
- 1–2 years golf course maintenance experience preferred, but not required
- Strong work ethic and commitment to professional growth
- Ability to obtain and maintain a North Carolina pesticide license (or ability to acquire within 6 months)
- Positive attitude, leadership potential, and willingness to learn
