Governors Club, a premier private golf community in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is seeking an energetic, motivated, and professional Assistant Golf Course Superintendent to join our golf course maintenance team.

Governors Club is a 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Design, established in 1990, with approximately 35,000 annual rounds. The golf course is nestled within the rolling terrain surrounding Edwards Mountain, one of the highest points in the Triangle at approximately 600 feet above sea level.

The property offers three distinct nine-hole courses—the Lakes, Foothills, and Mountain—each providing a unique golf experience and set of agronomic challenges.

The Opportunity

The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent will work directly with the Golf Course Superintendent and Director of Grounds in all aspects of maintaining and improving the golf course.

We are looking for someone who has a strong work ethic, an eye for detail, excellent communication skills, and a desire to continue developing professionally. This position is particularly well suited for an individual whose career goal is to become a Golf Course Superintendent.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in ultradwarf bermudagrass management, irrigation, chemical and fertilizer applications, personnel management, budgeting, construction, course improvement projects, and daily golf course operations.

The Assistant Superintendent will typically rotate every third weekend, with additional responsibilities during tournaments, major events, and other times when course conditions require additional coverage.

Course Improvements & Construction Experience

Governors Club has made a significant commitment to improving the golf course and its infrastructure.

Recent course improvements include:

• Installation of Capillary Concrete throughout the golf course bunker system
• Extensive XGD drainage improvements throughout the property
• Laser leveling and conversion of tees to Tahoma 31 bermudagrass
• Significant ongoing drainage and infrastructure improvements

The Club is also planning multiple golf course improvement projects:

• $3.2+ million reconstruction of the driving range and development of a new short-game area.
• Greens renovation and other course upgrades in 2028-2029. 

This project will provide the Assistant Superintendent with valuable exposure to golf course construction, project management, contractor coordination, grow-in, irrigation, and establishment of new turf areas.

Primary Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Assist in planning and executing efficient daily golf course maintenance operations
• Train, educate, and supervise full-time, seasonal, and intern staff
• Assist with personnel management, scheduling, and staff development
• Perform and oversee cultural practices throughout all areas of the golf course
• Calibrate and apply fertilizers and pesticides as part of an integrated pest management program
• Manage daily water requirements, including irrigation scheduling and hand watering
• Troubleshoot and repair irrigation system components
• Assist with the management of Champion ultradwarf bermudagrass putting greens
• Maintain accurate chemical, fertilizer, rainfall, moisture, project, and agronomic records
• Monitor and document putting-green moisture levels
• Assist with budgeting and purchasing materials and supplies for projects
• Participate in course improvement and construction projects
• Attend Greens Committee meetings as appropriate
• Help maintain the high conditioning and presentation standards expected at a premier private club

Preferred Qualifications

• Career goal of becoming a Golf Course Superintendent
• Strong work ethic and enthusiastic, team-oriented attitude
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• Strong attention to detail
• Interest in learning and advancing ultradwarf bermudagrass management practices
• Two- or four-year degree in turfgrass management or a related field preferred, but not required
• 3+ years of golf course maintenance experience preferred
• Previous pesticide and fertilizer application experience throughout all areas of a golf course
• North Carolina Pesticide Applicator License or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment
• Valid driver's license
• Ability to work effectively in a high-end private club environment
• Desire to continually learn, develop, and take on increased responsibility

Compensation

Base Salary: $55,000–$65,000, plus bonus potential

Compensation will be based on experience and qualifications.
