River Oaks Golf Club is seeking a motivated and career-driven Assistant Superintendent to join our agronomy team at one of the busiest public golf facilities in the region. This is an opportunity for someone who wants to be heavily involved in the day-to-day operation, decision-making, and continued improvement of a progressive golf course operation.

River Oaks is an 18-hole public golf facility located in Statesville, NC, with approximately 33,000 annual rounds. 

The golf course features:

• 3 acres of Mach 1 ultradwarf bermudagrass putting greens
• 419 bermudagrass tees, fairways, and roughs
• Tall fescue native and rough areas
• A strong focus on agronomic improvement, course presentation, and long-term infrastructure upgrades

Position Overview:

The Assistant Superintendent will work directly with the Superintendent in all aspects of golf course maintenance and management. This is a hands-on leadership role designed for someone looking to advance their career and gain real responsibility in:

• Daily course setup and presentation
• Spray applications and calibration
• Water management and irrigation troubleshooting
• Fertility and plant health programs
• Staff management and training
• Equipment operation and cultural practices
• Tournament preparation
• Budget tracking and operational planning

This position is ideal for an individual who wants to grow beyond simply following directions and instead become actively involved in the reasoning, planning, and execution behind modern golf course management.

Experience with warm-season turf, spraying, irrigation troubleshooting, or tournament preparation is a plus but not required for the right candidate.

Responsibilities:

• Assist in planning and supervising daily maintenance operations
• Train and supervise maintenance staff
• Apply fertilizers and pesticides safely and accurately
• Monitor turf health, moisture, and environmental conditions
• Assist with irrigation scheduling and repairs
• Participate in aerification, topdressing, and other cultural practices
• Maintain detailed records for applications and labor
• Help maintain a safe and organized maintenance facility
• Assist with weekend and holiday scheduling rotation

Preferred qualifications include:

• Turfgrass degree or certificate (preferred but not mandatory)
• Previous golf course maintenance experience
• North Carolina pesticide license or ability to obtain one
• Ability to operate golf course maintenance equipment
• Strong communication and organizational skills
• Ability to lift 50 pounds and work outdoors in varying conditions
